Free English level test

Find your English level in about five minutes. The test follows the CEFR scale from A1 to B2 and tells you exactly where to start. Read more about what the CEFR levels mean.

16 questions, about 5 minutes

Questions get harder as you go. Do not guess wildly: if you do not know, pick the answer that feels most natural.

How the test works

The questions move from beginner to upper intermediate. Each level has four questions. If you answer at least three of a level correctly, and you passed every level below it, that level becomes your result. This keeps lucky guesses from inflating your score.

After your result

Beginners and A1 learners can jump straight into the free A1 course. Higher levels will find grammar explanations in the English grammar guides and everyday words in the vocabulary lists. For an official certificate, compare exams in IELTS vs TOEFL and our guide to testing your English level.
